my rugby game

My class room did recount

My Rugby game

At the start of the school holidays I had a rugby game against Te Atatu

Roosters. We have never played against them before. I heard they were a good team so the game was going to be very competitive. Our game was at Blockhouse Bay field. My mum and dad took me to the game.

When we arrived, I felt nervous because I saw a lot of big boys. I thought about asking my coach to put me on wing instead of fullback because I would get bowled over.

I got out of the car and my Dad said,

“Play well, face your fear and don’t be scared.”

Mum said, “Make me happy son and score a few tries for me.”  I felt proud because I knew this time I was going to do it. Usually I would tell myself that I was going to do it, but I never did.

When we got into the changing room the coach told us to sit down on the bench.

He said, “If you are here to muck around then you can go back home. This is a really good team, if you want fifty dollars, then keep your defence nice and strong and make sure you score a couple of tries.
Make sure we are not here to play about. This team, once they see that, they come hard at you”.

We all got up, put our hands in the middle and shouted, “Vikings!”

The game was a bit hard as the other team had a lot of big boys.   I was  sent to the sideline for doing a high tackle.  The game was tough to watch from the sideline because my team was down 16 to 20 at the first half.  During the second half we came back to win 24 to 20.

At full time I thought, “Yeah, I’m getting fifty bucks!”

When we went to the changing room my coach was very happy that we had won, but not so happy that he had to pay us.  We all sang our theme song, jumped around, splashing water at each other.  It was the best day of my life.
